1. As 13 year Jesuit, much FAITH in teachings of RCChurch.
As scientist (Ph.D., Sociology), accepted scientific method
based on the absolute and universal laws of physics.
Now I believe in INTELLIGENT DESIGN.
Not the I.D. of the fundamentalists
(not Yahweh, or the Yahweh-who-becomes-God the Father, and so on.)
2. Why? (Comments from Paul Davies excellent article below)
"In religion, having BELIEF WITHOUT EVIDENCE (faith) is
regarded as a virtue. ". . .science has its own FAITH-BASED
SYSTEM. All science proceeds on the assumption that nature is
ordered in a rational and intelligible way (the laws of physics,
the fundamental rules on which nature runs)."
BUT "where do these laws come from? And why do they have
the form that they do." "To be a scientist you had to have FAITH
that the universe is governed by dependable, immutable, absolute,
universal, mathematical laws of an unspecified origin."
"Why are the laws of physics what they are?
General answer: "there is no reason they are what they are--they just are."
Recent debate: there exists a multiverse with its own meta-laws.
"The problem has simply been shifted up a level from the
laws of the universe to the meta-laws of the multiverse."
"Clearly, then, BOTH RELIGION AND SCIENCE are founded on FAITH--namely, on belief in the existence of something OUTSIDE the universe, like an unexplained God or an unexplained set of physical laws, maybe even a huge ensemble of unseen universes, too. For that reason, both monthesitic religion and orthodox science fail to provide a complete account of physical existence."
So. . . we're back to INTELLIGENT DESIGN.
Would Advaita Vedanta offer a plausible solution?
The Dreamer dreams the laws/rules of the dreamt!
The Dreamer being PURE SUBJECTIVITY.¹

NOTE: After reflecting on Paul Davies NYTimes article and Dennis Overbye's "Laws of Nature, Source Unknown" (12/18/08) Science Section article, the following arose;

Intelligent Design, II

Laws of the universe: govern or describe material reality?
Whence the laws?
Embedded in the Big Bang?
Or, with Plato, a higher realm of transcendental ideal forms?
Maybe, numbers (Pythagoras) or a mathematical structure?
("Everything in our world is purely mathematical
--including you," Dr. Tegark)
Contra Plato, quantum mechanic's irreducible randomness
(until some measurement fixes the electron's position).
Thus, the laws of nature change with time?
So . . .H.B.Nielsen offers a random "world machinery" for explanation.
Wheeler, on the other hand, suggests not the
ultimate law but the ultimate programmer.
(Shades of the Ultimate Programmer!)
Maybe, a meta-law--the lord of the laws, string theory?
(Shades of the Law Giver!)
Yet what said about the source of forever or emergent?
The Ultimate Programmer, The Ultimate Law-Giver?
Or, as in Advaita Vedanta, The Ultimate Projecter,
projecting the dream-like reality of the "world machinery."
Perhaps the vibratory nature of creation is needed.¹
Before creation, only undifferentiated Spirit.
Manifesting creation, Spirit becomes God, the Father,
Son and Holy Ghost.²

The TRUTH

What is the truth about:
   -the 12th Planet and the Anunnaki¹
   (Myth or real history?)
   -the Egyptians and Mayans
   (Why is the age of the Great Pyramid so important?)
   (What does Dec 21, 2012 really signify?)
   -white powder gold/Manna/mfkzt
     (Food or myth?)²
   -Ark of the Covenant
     (a REAL powerfully generative superconductor
     emitting light beams/harmful rays or
     a religious artifact)²
   -the early Christians
   (Why are the Gnostics so relevant?)³
   -the New Testament
   (forgery or truth-full?)⁴
   -the physical person of Jesus Christ?
   (a real physical person or another myth?)⁵

What is the truth about:
   -the secret societies?
   (Knights Templar, Illuminati, Masons, Skull and Bones?)
   -metaphysics?
   (theosophy, much New Age thought, crop circles, UFOs?)
   -the founding fathers of the USA?
   (mainstream versus alternative interpretations?)
   -911?
   (Inside job or as portrayed by gov/media?)
   -global warming?
   (a whole range of opinions)
   -who really rules in the USA?
   (a democracy or plutocracy or ??)⁶

What is the truth about:
   -the creation of man?
   (evolution, Creator, extraterrestrials?)
   -material reality?
   (really real or an illusion?)⁷
   -who I am?
   (an imaginery "self" or essence/"non-doership)⁸

Is it possible to have the truth about any or all of these?
Probably NOT!
Just debates, arguments, diatribes, spins,
biased/prejudices, close-mindedness, etc.

Will it ever end?
Probably NOT!
And even if we find out the truth about any
of this, does it matter to you?
Or to the other 6 billion people on the planet?
And, could you do much about it anyway?
But, of course, try, try, try.

Is it just POWER that is important?
Use anything and everything in order to
get that POWER (to control society's values).
General Principle: Those in power--in whatever
structure (politics, religion, business)--
will say (and do?) anything to stay in power.
So. . . POWER trumps TRUTH!

How sad.

It probably is impossible to obtain the OBJECTIVE TRUTH.
So... search for your own SUBJECTIVE TRUTH that satisfies.

The TRUTH, II

Dreaming, all seems real.
Awakening, all seems a dream, unreal.
Yet is awakened a dream?
Thus, also unreal.
Can the dreamer "awaken?"
How?
Can we have an object without a subject?
Or a subject without an object?
Can the eye see the eye?
And if there is no object and no subject, what then?
Pure Potentiality?
Pure Subjectivity? (the Unmanifested)
Prior to conceptualization,
   direct, transcendent vision--
   the perfection of wisdom (The Heart Sutra).
"The enlightened state is the state of non-being and non-identity.
The identified man takes part: the unidentified looks on.
The dreamer, meanwhile, is the identified dreamer,
   not the impersonal Dreamer of the total cosmos."
"In all we are or could be subjectively
   we are whatever Godhead is.
And what is that?
Just the absence of what we suppose ourselves
   to be, which is the presence of what we ARE.
And what is that?
Our total objective absence, which is
   necessarily the subjective presence of God
   (the immanent divine nature).
Whatever I am is whatever God is.
The supposed mystery, so incomprehensible, is only
   due to seeking the truth as object."¹
Thus, "phenomena (appearances) are nothing but neumenon
   (source) and noumenon (source) is the absence of non-
   phenomenality (appearances)."

"Illusionism"

Last night, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr,
Charlie Rose with John Hope Franklin.
VERY Inspiring!!
A great model of improving people's lives.
Such that I felt guilt
at not doing more in like manner.
Upon reflection,
even if everyone finally got what they needed,
a decent house, a good salary with healthcare, etc.
What would still be missing?
Waking up from the improved situation!
In fact, maybe clinging to the better life!
Breaking the illusions, especially the FINAL one,
   is the name of the game.
FREE from the illusions of mainstream history
   to the illusions of alternative histories..
FREE from the illusions promulgated by the Catholic
Church to the illusions of other religions
   and/or authoritative spiritual paths.
Ultimately, FREE from the illusory nature of
the self and the world, that is,
FREE from "illusionism" (ALL illusions)
So, maybe improving the situation
could be another distraction from the
FINAL UNDERSTANDING?
